The weather may have cut things short, but WPI keeper Savio Ketnouvong made sure RPI didn’t spoil his shutout streak.
The sophomore from Paxton, Mass., turned away four shots to earn his third straight clean sheet as WPI and RPI battled to a 0-0 draw Saturday at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium. The match was halted in the 72nd minute due to severe weather in the Worcester area.
With the result, WPI moves to 2-0-1 on the season while RPI stands at 1-0-2.
Rensselaer carried the attack early, firing the first two shots on goal, only for Ketnouvong to stand tall. WPI’s best first-half chance came late in the 40th minute, when Noah Amorim (Weymouth, Mass.) forced RPI’s Noah Churchill (Fort Mill, S.C.) into a save.
The visitors nearly broke through after halftime when Owen Filler (Belmont, Mass.) delivered a free kick into the box that found Noah Gregory’s (Baltimore, Md.) head. His redirect looked destined for the back of the net, but Ketnouvong sprawled left to deny it — his highlight stop of the day.
RPI finished with a 7-4 edge in shots and earned the match’s lone corner kick, but Ketnouvong’s strong play preserved WPI’s unbeaten start. The sophomore has now gone 251 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
WPI returns to action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Dean, while RPI heads to Keene State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
