New Hampshire State Police say two dangerous drivers — one impaired, another pushing a sports car past 130 mph — were among more than 100 motorists stopped during a Labor Day traffic blitz.
Troopers with the NHSP Special Enforcement Unit and Troop B blanketed Interstate 93 in Salem and Interstate 89 in Sunapee on Monday, Sept. 1, 2025, aided by the agency’s aircraft. In just one day, they made 104 stops, including 48 drivers clocked at 90 mph or faster and nine reckless drivers breaking 100 mph.
One of the most serious encounters came at 7:28 a.m., when Trooper Sam Provenza was finishing an unrelated stop and watched a car blow past without moving over. The vehicle swerved, prompting Provenza to pull it over. The driver, identified as 57-year-old Robert L. Kelley Jr. of Windham, was found to be impaired. Kelley was arrested and charged with DWI, open container, failure to move over, and lane control violations. He was released and is due in Salem District Court on Sept. 25.
Less than an hour later, at 8:14 a.m., Sgt. Jay LaPointe — flying as an aircraft observer — spotted a red sports car rocketing down I-93 at 115 mph before topping out at 131 mph. He radioed the sighting to Lt. Christopher Storm, who intercepted the vehicle on the ground. The driver, 24-year-old Joseph Cummings of Haverhill, Massachusetts, was arrested for reckless driving and is scheduled to appear in Salem District Court on Oct. 16.
The State Police said the enforcement surge was part of its mission to promote highway safety and reduce crashes. The agency urged drivers to slow down and stay sober, warning that Troopers will continue to patrol aggressively to keep New Hampshire roads safe.
