Tyre, N.Y. — A tractor-trailer struck an overpass Friday morning on the New York State Thruway, causing traffic disruptions and minor injuries to a passenger in a separate vehicle, according to State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:41 a.m. on July 25 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90, just before Exit 41 in the town of Tyre, Seneca County. Investigators say the tractor-trailer, operated by Mokhtar Mohammadi, 32, of Houston, Texas, was traveling westbound when it hit the Route 89 overpass at mile marker 315.9.
Debris from the collision struck a nearby vehicle in an adjacent lane. A passenger in that vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Geneva General Hospital for treatment. Mohammadi was not injured in the crash and was issued a ticket for operating an over-height vehicle.
The Thruway has since reopened in both directions. However, following an inspection, officials determined that the Route 89 overpass sustained damage from the impact. As a precaution, Thruway maintenance crews will be closing the southbound lane on Route 89 and installing temporary traffic signals to allow alternating two-way traffic until repairs are made.
The incident remains under investigation.
