Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, the New York Yankees clashed with their storied rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in a thrilling matchup that had fans on the edge of their seats. The Yankees emerged triumphant, securing a 9-6 victory in the first game of their highly anticipated three-game series, much to the delight of the 46,783 passionate fans in attendance.
Right-handed pitcher Will Warren took the mound for the Yankees, delivering a commendable performance over 5.1 innings. He allowed just three hits while giving up four earned runs, striking out six batters and issuing four walks. Although he surrendered a home run during the game, Warren’s strong early showing contributed to his fourth win of the season, bolstering the Yankees’ momentum on this electric night.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a standout game, going 3-for-5 with one run and one home run, while also notching 4RBI and stealing two bases. This marked his second consecutive game recording three hits, as he drove in four of the Yankees’ nine runs. His homer was a pivotal three-run blast in the first inning, and he followed it up with an RBI single in the second. Since being reinstated from the injured list on June 3, he has been on fire, hitting an impressive .500/.500/.875 (8-for-16) with three runs, two home runs, 6RBI, and three stolen bases over four games.
Anthony Volpe had an impactful night as well, going 1-for-1 with a run, a home run, and 3RBI, but his night was cut short. In the top of the fourth inning, he exited the game with a left elbow contusion after being hit by a pitch in the second inning, though subsequent X-rays and a CT scan revealed no fractures.
Aaron Judge consistently showcased his offensive prowess, hitting 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, 1RBI, and a stolen base. This game marked his Major League-leading 29th multi-hit game this season. He contributed significantly with an RBI single in the fifth inning and is currently batting .442/.583/.721 (19-for-43) with three doubles, three home runs, 28RBI, 15 walks, one hit by pitch, and one sacrifice fly with runners in scoring position throughout the year.
Paul Goldschmidt broke his recent slump and went 1-for-5, scoring twice with a solo home run in the sixth inning, ending an 0-for-13 streak. Meanwhile, Cody Bellinger continued to impress, going 1-for-5 with a double while maintaining a solid batting average of .312/.382/.560 (34-for-109) with 17 runs, seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 19RBI, 12 walks, one hit by pitch, one sacrifice fly, and two stolen bases over his past 28 games since May 3.
Austin Wells also made contributions, going 2-for-4 with one run, marking a productive stretch where he has hit safely in eight of his last ten games since May 23. In the ninth inning, Devin Williams capped off the victory with a scoreless inning, recording one strikeout and earning his seventh save of the year.
This season, Yankees batters have hit a remarkable 101 home runs, ranking third-most in franchise history through the team’s first 62 games, trailing only their own records of 104 home runs in 2017 and 103 in 2018.
On the other side, Boston’s Walker Buehler struggled on the mound, lasting only 2.0 innings and allowing a staggering seven hits, seven runs (five earned), two walks, and two strikeouts. This marked his fourth loss of the season and his highest run total allowed since June 18, 2024, while playing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Zack Kelly showcased some resilience, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in relief with four strikeouts.
Marcelo Mayer shined for the Red Sox, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and hitting his first career home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning. He joins teammates Kristian Campbell (who hit his first home run on March 29 against Texas) and Carlos Narváez (who hit his on April 18 against the Chicago White Sox) as players to achieve this milestone this season. Rafael Devers, another standout for Boston, went 1-for-4 with two runs and celebrated his 13th home run of the year with a two-run blast in the seventh inning.
Romy Gonzalez contributed as well, hitting a pinch-hit two-run single in the sixth inning, while Abraham Toro delivered the only multi-hit game for Boston, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
