On Sunday at the vibrant Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, the UConn Women’s basketball team triumphed over the South Carolina Gamecocks, securing a resounding 82-59 victory in the NCAA Women’s National Championship.

With Sunday’s impressive win, UConn reclaimed its position atop the women’s college basketball world, marking its first national title since 2016 — nine years since they last celebrated such glory.

This victory represents the 12th national championship for the legendary head coach Geno Auriemma, further solidifying his remarkable legacy in women’s basketball. Meanwhile, South Carolina’s head coach Dawn Staley saw her team fall just one win short of notching back-to-back championships, a close encounter that deepened the narrative of their season.

Leading the charge for the Huskies was senior guard Azzi Fudd, who delivered an outstanding performance with 24 points, far exceeding her season average of 13.3 points per game. Paige Bueckers, in what was a bittersweet farewell to her illustrious collegiate career, contributed significantly with 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Fudd’s stellar play earned her the distinction of Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

UConn’s formidable trio was rounded out by standout freshman Sarah Strong, who dominated both ends of the court. With this championship win, UConn finished their season with an impressive record of 37-3, capped off by a remarkable 16-game winning streak. South Carolina concluded their season at 35-4, grappling with the tough reality that two of their four losses came at the hands of the Huskies.
