On a cold, windy and wet Saturday afternoon at Polar Park, nestled in Worcester’s bustling Canal District, an exciting opportunity unfolded for fans of the Worcester Red Sox to engage with their favorite players.
The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as players and coaches were seated at neatly arranged tables in the inviting DCU Club. A spirited line of several hundred fans, stretching all the way to the charming Triple Decker Garden, eagerly awaited their turn to connect with the team.
One by one, fans filtered into the DCU Club, stopping at each table to meet and chat with beloved figures like Manager Chad Tracy and Defensive Coach Iggy Suarez.
The event was a nostalgic nod to the past, featuring Red Sox and Worcester WooSox Hall of Famer and Hitting Instructor Rich Gedman, whose presence brought a special touch to the gathering.
Young players including Luis Guerrero, Bryan Mata, Vaughn Grissom, and the highly talented Marcelo Mayer, joined seasoned WooSox veteran Nick Sogard and Corey Rosier in the excitement. As they signed autographs and shared smiles, the connection between the team and its fans deepened, turning an afternoon into a memorable celebration of baseball and community spirit.
“It’s always cool to meet the players and, you know, the history of the Pawtucket, now the Worcester Red Sox, and someday they’ll be up in the big leagues playing for Boston,” said Kevin Granger of Grafton, Massachusetts. “It’s always pretty cool to meet them in their humble beginnings and see them before they reach stardom.”
Granger attended Saturday’s meet and greet with his kids and said, “I remember going to the old Pawtucket Red Sox with my dad and mom and my brothers when we were kids. It’s cool to have the kids be here and be able to be a part of the game and build up that fanhood and be fans of the Worcester Red Sox as well as the Boston Red Sox. Growing up in Worcester, it’s cool that it’s now in Worcester.”
When asked what he would say to someone who’s not from Worcester but is thinking about coming to a baseball game or just doing one of these type of meet and greets, Granger replied, “I mean, baseball always brings people together and it’s always fun and they do a real good job in Worcester for the kids and it’s not those major league prices, so it’s a deal and it’s always fun and you’ll build some memories.”
Patrick from Hooksett, New Hampshire traveled to Polar Park Saturday with his son who he says is a big fan.
“I love that he takes part in the things that I like, too, and just love that he enjoys baseball,” said Patrick, who also took his son to Fenway park earlier this winter for the Fenway Fest.
As for Saturday’s game two of three against the Syracuse Mets, the highly originally set to unfold at 4:05 pm was postponed due to a persistent rain that began approximately an hour prior to the scheduled start time. Weather forecasts indicated that the rain showers were expected to linger throughout the evening.
The rainout will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader when the Syracuse Mets revisit Polar Park for a series spanning from April 22-27.
For fans who purchased tickets for Saturday’s game, there is a silver lining: they can exchange their tickets for any remaining WooSox home game this season, subject to availability, with an impressive 73 home dates still on the calendar! Those holding hard tickets for today’s matchup can swap them for a similar ticket of equal or lesser value. Fans with electronic tickets have the flexibility to make this exchange either in person at the Polar Park box office or through the convenience of woosox.com. Digital tickets may be presented at the Ticket Office for an exchange, also based on availability. For any questions, fans can easily reach out to the Ticket Office staff by calling 508-500-8888.
Today marks the season’s first home game postponement, coming right after a single-game performance just yesterday! It’s notable that this is the second consecutive year that the WooSox have seen their second home game postponed, as last year, both their second and third home games (April 3 and 4) faced similar delays due to inclement weather.
Reflecting on the previous season, Worcester experienced a total of five home postponements alongside five road delays. Overall, the WooSox had to navigate through 14 games that were either postponed (11) or canceled (3) in 2023 due to the unpredictable weather, with five of those disruptions occurring at Polar Park. In contrast, the team only encountered two home postponements throughout the entirety of 2022, following five home postponements and one canceled game during their inaugural season at Polar Park in 2021.
Looking ahead, the WooSox and Syracuse Mets are set to wrap up their now-concise two-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm.
Sunday’s game promises to be packed with exciting promotional highlights at Polar Park, including the much-loved “Bark in the Park” event, where fans are welcome to bring their furry friends, presented by the Veterinary Urgent Care Center in Worcester. Additionally, it’s “Fallon Health Sunday Funday,” featuring the Fallon Health Future Starters program, where young fans can step onto the field with the WooSox and take home an autographed baseball. To top it all off, kids will have the chance to run the bases post-game, making for a memorable day at the ballpark!
