Ava Giansiracusa, a sophomore guard for WPI women’s basketball from Wethersfield, CT, has been recognized for her outstanding performance this season by being named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Second Team. This marks her first All-NEWMAC honor, earned after an impressive sophomore campaign where she contributed significantly to the team’s offense, particularly as a bench player.
Throughout the season, Giansiracusa was a key player, scoring a total of 281 points and grabbing 114 rebounds, averaging 11.7 points and 4.8 rebounds over 24 games, including two starts. She also recorded 39 assists and 22 steals.
Giansiracusa’s standout performance came in mid-February when she was named NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week after scoring 34 points in a week that helped propel her team to a four-game winning streak, ultimately securing a spot in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament.
During this successful stretch, she scored 12 points in a thrilling overtime victory against Emerson and achieved a career-high 22 points along with seven rebounds in a decisive win over Coast Guard.
Despite finishing the season with a record of 13-14 and 5-6 in conference play, WPI enjoyed a five-game win streak, including a notable upset against Babson in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament, before being eliminated by MIT in the semifinals.
