URI 2024 Season Ends With 10-17 Loss To Mercer

This past Saturday, the University of Rhode Island Rams ended their 2024 football season with a hard-fought and tightly contested 10-17 loss to Mercer, a game that, despite the outcome, showcased the grit and determination of this team.
Throughout the season, the Rams established themselves as a formidable Division I football squad, distinguished by breathtaking big plays and periods of complete dominance, interspersed with just enough mistakes to keep the excitement alive. Their relentless spirit and high-level performance were evident week after week, culminating in an impressive overall record of 11 victories.
In the realm of conference play, the Rams thrived, finishing with a commendable 7-1 record that reflected their competitive edge.
Their home field, Meade Stadium, proved to be a fortress as they marched through the season undefeated, securing an immaculate 7-0 record at home.
The Rams demonstrated their superiority in the New England region, going unbeaten against local rivals with a stellar 5-0 mark against other New England opponents, and they triumphed in both of their contests against in-state foes, concluding with a 2-0 record.
During the season finale against Mercer, wide receiver Marquis Buchanan emerged as a key player, delivering an electrifying performance with 11 receptions that amassed 119 yards, along with a touchdown that energized the crowd. As the season progressed, Buchanan consistently proved to be a critical component of the Rams’ offense, culminating in a phenomenal season total of 82 catches and 1,124 receiving yards, while also finding the end zone eight times—an achievement that highlighted his talent and work ethic.
Quarterback Hunter Helmes exhibited poise and accuracy in the decisive game, completing 22 of 33 passes for a productive 266 yards and a touchdown. His overall season statistics paint a picture of a skilled leader on the field: 105 completions out of 171 attempts, yielding an impressive 1,270 yards and five touchdown passes. Helmes’ ability to connect with his receivers and manage the game was a crucial factor in the Rams’ success throughout the season.
The ground attack this season was spearheaded by the dynamic Malik Grant, who finished the season with 13 rushing touchdowns, showcasing his explosive speed and agility, along with two receiving touchdowns that highlighted his versatility as an offensive weapon.
Deon Silas also made significant contributions this season, scoring two rushing touchdowns, while fellow teammates Greg Gaines III and Tommy Smith continued to shine; Gaines secured three touchdowns through the air, and Smith exhibited his multifaceted skills with three receiving touchdowns along with two rushing scores.
