The Boston Red Sox played the second game of a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The Sox lost 11-3 on Monday’s opener as they’ve lost the first four games of the season series, after they got swept in the home opening series in April.
The Sox started Brayan Bello on the mound as he went five innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, two walks while striking out seven.
Tyler O’Neil took the night off as Rob Refsnyder batted in the DH spot, and David Hamliton played at second base while Ceddane Rafaela played in center field.
The Sox got the ground running after Wilyer Abreu hit a solo shot to right field and Rafael Devers RBI single that scored Refsnyder for a 2-0 lead.
The Orioles took the lead after Jordan Westburg hit a two-run single for a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the first.
The Sox took back the lead with a Jarren Duran RBI double and Devers scoring Duran on an infield single in the second to take the 4-3 lead.
The Orioles would never score a run for the rest of the game, even though they loaded the bases in the sixth, they were shut down by Brennan Bernardino, with a strikeout to Austin Hays, who pinch hit for Cedic Mullins, and then played left field for the rest of the game, moving Colton Cowser to center. Bernadino also threw out Anthony Santander at home and struck out Anthony Santander.
Bernadino continued in the seventh inning as he struck out another two batters and gave up a walk as he saved the lead for the Sox.
In the eighth, Devers hit a ball towards the wall in left field, and speeded out for a triple, Boston his first triple since 2022, he scored on a single by Connor Wong. With the triple, Devers hit his 422nd extra-base hit with tied the Sox record for most extra base hits before the age of 28, where Jim Rice had the same number of hits before his 28th birthday. His 28th birthday will be on Oct. 24.
Romy Gonzalez knocked in an insurance run that scored Hamliton in the ninth, after pinch hitting for Abreu. Then Refsnyder hit a two-run homer to make it 8-3. Greg Weissert closed out the game in the ninth when he allowed two hits and one strikeout as he sealed the 8-3 victory.
The Sox will look to win the series as they will play Wednesday night with Kutter Crawford going for the Sox against Corbin Burnes, with first pitch at 6:35 pm on NESN/NESN360.
