Coming into the 2023-2024 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were coming off a win in Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles. It was their second Super Bowl victory in four years.
Kansas City opened their season with a home loss to the Detroit Lions. Following the loss, the Chiefs pulled off six consecutive victories, including close victories on the road against the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets.
After a 24-9 loss against the Denver Broncos, the Chiefs dropped four of their next seven games, including back-to-back games against the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills, a game in which an offside against wide receiver Kedarious Toney wiped away a potential game-winning touchdown.
That wasn’t the only thing the Chiefs dropped over their struggle during the second half of the season. They led the league in drops by receivers at one point, as well. One of those drops came at a crucial time in their Monday night loss against the Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch.
After a Christmas Day home loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, there were questions of whether or not the Chiefs would even win the AFC West. They would ultimately, however, win the division with back-to-back victories to close out the regular season.
The Chiefs would be the three seed in the playoffs, earning them a home playoff spot in the wild card round. After a 26-7 win over the Miami Dolphins, the Chiefs were set to go on the road the rest of the way for the first time in Patrick Mahomes’ career.
Despite being underdogs in both road playoff games, the Chiefs would come out on top over both the second-seeded Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round and top-seeded Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.
Now, only the San Francisco 49ers stand in the way of the Chiefs winning their second consecutive Super Bowl and their third in five years. They would become the first repeat champion since the New England Patriots won in 2004 and 2005.
Super Bowl LVIII will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
