The UConn men’s basketball team hosted Saint Mary’s in the Round of 32 at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY on Sunday evening. The Huskies were looking to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in nine years with a win.
UConn only led by one at the half, but they used a strong second to pull away in a 70-55 victory over Saint Mary’s. Amanda Sonogo led the team with 24 points, shooting 11 of 16 from the field. Tristen Newton and Jordan Hawkins also had impressive outings as they scored 13 and 12 respectively while shooting 3 of 4 from three and 4 of 5 from three respectively, as well.
Hawkins was a big part of UConn’s dominant second half as he made all three of his three-pointers in a row, scoring nine straight points for UConn in the victory.
The Huskies will face their toughest challenge as they take on eight-seed Arkansas in the Sweet 16 in Las Vegas on Thursday. Arkansas knocked out the defending national champion Kansas in the Round of 32 this past weekend.
