Friday morning at the Massachusetts State House, Governor Maura T. Healey started her morning on Beacon Hill with the swearing in of Attorney Harold P. Naughton Jr. as Associate Justice of the District Court.
Justice Naughton, who is replacing Judge Margaret Guzman, was nominated by Governor Charlie Baker in December 2022 for the judgeship.
Guzman, who is a graduate of Clark University in Worcester, and the Boston University School of Law was nominated to the federal bench by President Biden in July 2023. Judge Guzman, a former public defender in Worcester Massachusetts, will be the first Hispanic judge to sit on the federal U.S. District Court for Massachusetts.
Judge Naughton, who received his bachelor’s degree from Assumption College in 1982 and his juris doctor from Suffolk University School of Law in 1991, began his legal career in 1995 as the principal attorney for Naughton Law Office; he served as a commissioned officer for the U.S. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General Corps. from 2003 to 2017. Since 2017, he has served as a senior defense council and operational law attorney for the Massachusetts Army National Guard. From 1995 to 2021,
Judge Naughton has also served his community as a State Representative in the Massachusetts House of Representatives representing the Twelfth Worcester District, on the Clinton Planning Board and the Clinton School Committee.
