An abandoned motor vehicle on Route 95 South, south of the Whittier Bridge in Newburyport Tuesday morning, ended with the body of the owner of the vehicle, being found in the Merrimack River late Tuesday afternoon.

While Massachusetts State Police have not yet identified who the person is, they have confirmed it is a 70-year-old Beverly woman. After Massachusetts State Police found the vehicle abandoned they requested Beverly Police check the woman’s address. When officers determined that the woman was not there, there was a search for the women by land, water, and air. At approximately 3:15 PM, Salisbury Police advised State Police that a canoeist in wetlands along the river located a body in the water.

The body was recovered by the Coast Guard and transported by boat to the USCG Station-Merrimack River in Newburyport where Troopers confirmed that the person recovered was the motorist whose car was found on Route 95 South

Massachusetts State Police said in a statement “The investigation into the cause and manner of the woman’s death is ongoing. Her name is not being released at this time.’
