Worcester Red Sox Drop Second Game With Syracuse Mets 4-2

Kicking off the Fall with some baseball, 5,857 fans came out to Polar Park Thursday night as the Worcester Red Sox had their third meeting this week with the Syracuse Mets. The WooSox went 32-34 this Spring (April 5 – June 19), were 40-36 during the Summer (June 21 – September 21), and now will play their final seven games of the 2022 season in the Fall. The WooSox went 8-2 last September 22 – October 3 to end their inaugural season with a 74-54 record.

Worcester and Syracuse have split the first two games of this 6-game set the past two nights. Wednesday night the Mets blanked the Sox, 5-0 sending Worcester to just their fourth shutout loss of the season compared to nine shutout victories. The WooSox won the series-opener on Tuesday night, 3-2 in a game called after 5½ innings due to rain. 

This game got started at the top of the first with Dominic Smith hitting a single to help drive in Jake Mangum to make it a 1-0 game. But at the bottom of the first Enmanuel Valdez hit his ninth double of the season to help get Jarren Duran over the plate to make this a 1-1 ballgame. 

Bottom of the sixth, Pedro Castellanos hit a single to help get Ryan Fitzgearald over the plate and make it a 1-2 game. But at the top of the seventh Carlos Rincon hit a double to get Yolmer Sanchez over the plate and make this a 2-2 game. 

Top of the eighth the Syracuse Mets made this a 4-2 game with Deven Marrero and Nick Meyer both making it over the plate. 

During Thursday night’s game the Worcester Red Sox confirmed that Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi will be Worcester’s starting pitcher Friday) night on injury rehab assignment. Eovaldi  was most recently placed on the Red Sox 15-Day Injured List on August 22 (retro to August 19) with right shoulder inflammation. Eovaldi, 32, is 5-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 18 starts for the Red Sox this season – 99.2 IP, 108 H, 53 R, 46 ER, 18 BB, 96 SO. His last start for Boston came on August 12 vs. the Yankees when he went 6 strong innings allowing 2 runs in a game the Red Sox won in 10-innings, 3-2.

Regularly-scheduled WooSox starter Josh Winckowski will follow Eovaldi on the mound tomorrow night. Bryan Mata remains as the WooSox scheduled starter for Saturday’s 4:05 pm game while Kyle Hart will get the nod for the home finale on Sunday at 1:05 pm.

The WooSox and Mets series continues Friday night at 6:45 pm) followed by the final home weekend of the season on Saturday at 4:05 pm and Sunday at 1:05 pm.
