Worcester Red Sox Fall In Game 1 Of Double Header But Pick Themselves Back Up To Win Game 2, 5-7 Against The Iron Pigs

At Polar Park in downtown Worcester Friday afternoon, the Worcester Red Sox hosted the Iron Pigs for a double header after Thursday night’s postponement due to rain. Last season the WooSox had five home postponements, one canceled home game and had seven doubleheaders.

Friday afternoon was sunny, clear skies and 65 for the first pitch in game one at 4:05 PM and in the bottom of the first the Worcester Red Sox got things going with Jeter Downs hitting his second homer of the season 437 feet to center to make it a WooSox 0-1 lead. 

In the bottom of the second the Worcester Red Sox had a solo run with Yolmer Sanchez to make it a 0-2 WooSox lead and in the bottom of the fourth Ryan Fitzgerald hit an RBI (Yolmer Sanchez) triple to make it a 0-3 WooSox lead. 

At the top of the 5th the Iron Pigs began their take over of this game with Dalton Guthrie hitting a single and Worcester native John Andreoli scoring to make it a 1-3 WooSox lead but then in the bottom of the 6th Nick Maton hit his second homer of the season and Roman Quinn scored. 

At the top of the 7th Ronald Torreyes hit a double to drive in Drew Maggi and Dalton Guthrie hit his third double to drive in Ronald Torreyes. To secure the Iron Pigs 7-3 win, Dalton Guthrie scored.

Game two of Friday’s double header at Polar Park got underway at 6:46 PM and at the bottom of the first the Worcester Red Sox showed just how hungry they were for some roasted pig. Jeter Downs started it off by getting the first run of the game. The Ronaldo Hernandez hit a double to drive in Triston Casas, Franchy Cordero and Christin Stewart. Before the bottom of the first would come to an end, Roberto Ramos ghit his second homer of the season and Ronaldo Hernandez scored too end the first 0-6 WooSox lead. 

At the top of the the Iron Pigs had a solo run and then at the bottom of the third, The WooSox found some life in Franchy Cordero who hit his fourth double of the season to drive in Rob Refsnyder to make it a 1-7 WooSox lead. 

The Iron Pigs had two runs at the top of the 5th and one run at the top of the seventh to give the Worcester Red Sox a 5-7 win.
