Restaurant owners in Boston’s North End throughout the COVID-19 pandemic have been allowed too set up outside dining and their customers have enjoyed the outside dining but for it to continue, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu wants North End restaurants to pay a $7,500 fee. In addition, restaurants will be charged $458 a month for each parking spot used in their outdoor dining areas.
Some restaurant owners announced Friday that they are pursuing legal action against these fees that the Mayor has implemented, calling the new policy “discriminatory” because the Mayor’s new policy would not apply to restaurant owners in other areas of the city.
Mayor Wu has defended her new policy, saying it will help with things like street cleaning and alternate parking.
At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Mayor Wu is expected to hold a press conference.
