Springfield Police Arrest Target Of Illegal Firearms Investigation

On Friday, Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit arrested Luke McKinnie, 19, of Springfield and Xavion Martin, 20, of Springfield.

McKinnie is charged with Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way, Carrying a Firearm without a License and Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm.

Martin is charged with Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License and Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

McKinnie was the target of an ongoing illegal firearms investigation and has open firearms charges in Hampden District Court from a previous arrest in Springfield.

On Friday night while Detectives were conducting surveillance they observed McKinnie get into the passenger seat of a car and drive off. Detectives conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of Main Street and McKinnie took off running. He was taken into custody in the area of Mill Street and East Columbus Avenue. While running from the detectives, McKinnie tossed a firearm and it was recovered.

Xavion Martin was the driver of the vehicle and detectives observed a firearm between his feet on the floorboard.
