Drivers using Interstate 95 in Bangor should prepare for changing southbound lane and ramp closures October 16 through October 19 as crews move traffic onto a new bridge over Broadway. MaineDOT announced the work Friday as part of the ongoing bridge replacement project at Exit 185.
The work includes shoulder reconstruction, excavation, milling and paving. Crews will complete the transition in four phases, with at least one southbound highway lane remaining open during the described sequence.
Initially, the southbound high-speed lane will close while the travel lane continues across the temporary bridge and both ramps remain open. The high-speed lane will then open on the new bridge while the travel lane and Exit 185 southbound off-ramp close.
The off-ramp will reopen during the third phase, while the travel lane remains closed. The southbound on-ramp may also close if necessary as crews work at the southern end of the lane and ramp.
When the off-ramp is closed, motorists should use Exit 186 for Stillwater Avenue and follow detour signs to Broadway. If the southbound on-ramp closes, drivers should follow the signed detour from Broadway to Stillwater Avenue to enter I-95 at Exit 186.
The final phase restores both southbound lanes and both ramps across the new bridge. MaineDOT said message boards will alert drivers to upcoming closures and asked motorists for patience as the work proceeds.
