Police investigations and deadly incidents are making headlines across the Northeast. A Fairfield police officer was injured after being struck by a man on a stolen moped, a Connecticut deputy police chief was arrested following a domestic incident, and police in Massachusetts arrested a man accused of wielding an ax and assaulting a woman. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old girl was killed in a New York City garbage truck crash, and authorities identified a 21-year-old man who drowned off the New Jersey coast.
FAIRFIELD OFFICER INJURED BY STOLEN MOPED
A Fairfield, Connecticut police officer was injured Thursday evening after police said a man on a stolen moped accelerated toward him and struck him head-on while the officer was responding to a reported theft on Brentwood Avenue. Two Bridgeport men, ages 28 and 20, were arrested following the incident.
NAUGATUCK DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF ARRESTED
Naugatuck Deputy Police Chief Daniel Norck was arrested Friday in connection with a domestic incident, according to police. Norck was placed on paid administrative leave and will remain there while an internal affairs investigation is completed.
MAN WITH AX ARRESTED IN WAREHAM
A man wielding an ax was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly assaulting a woman in a vehicle near the Wareham rest stop on Route 195 east. Massachusetts State Police received multiple 911 calls around 8:30 a.m., and officers from several barracks joined the search before Wareham police located and arrested the man near Swifts Beach.
15-YEAR-OLD GIRL KILLED IN EAST VILLAGE CRASH
A 15-year-old girl was killed and a 16-year-old girl was injured Friday night when the Citi Bike they were riding was struck by a private garbage truck in New York City’s East Village. The 16-year-old, who was operating the bicycle, was hospitalized in stable condition, while the 15-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
21-YEAR-OLD DROWNS OFF NORTH WILDWOOD
Authorities identified 21-year-old Ahmet Yimenici of Turkey as the man who drowned Thursday off North Wildwood, New Jersey. Surfers located Yimenici unconscious in the water near 2nd Avenue and the Beach, and firefighters and Beach Patrol personnel began life-saving measures before he was transported to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional, where he was pronounced dead.
