Tuesday delivered a dramatic night across New England and the sports world. The Worcester Red Sox opened their final homestand with a walk-off victory that kept their playoff hopes alive, the Boston Marathon announced a record-sized charity program for 2027, Milwaukee secured another division championship, and Pete Alonso reached one of baseball’s biggest milestones in an emotional return to New York.
WOOSOX WALK IT OFF TO KEEP PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE
The Worcester Red Sox opened their final homestand at Polar Park with a thriller, rallying to tie Durham with two outs in the eighth before winning, 2-1, with two outs in the 10th.
Allan Castro delivered again. Two days after his two-run homer gave Worcester an 8-7 victory at Lehigh Valley, Castro ripped the game-winning RBI single to right, scoring Max Ferguson and setting off the celebration at Polar Park.
Jedixson Paez delivered six strong innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Tanner Houck followed with a dominant rehab appearance, striking out the side around one walk in the seventh, before Hobie Harris worked two scoreless innings and earned the victory.
Worcester improved to 38-30 in the second half and 74-65 overall. With five games remaining, the WooSox are two games behind Rochester and Indianapolis in the race for the International League’s second-half playoff spot.
BOSTON MARATHON CHARITY PROGRAM EXPANDS TO RECORD 215 ORGANIZATIONS
The Boston Athletic Association has selected 215 organizations for the 2027 Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program, the largest number in race history. The organizations will raise money ahead of the 131st Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19, 2027.
The announcement comes after a record-breaking 2026 campaign that generated $57.3 million, up 13.7% from the previous record of $50.4 million in 2025. Since the charity program began in 1989, more than $675 million has been raised surrounding the Boston Marathon.
“The Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America is truly a powerful event when it comes to fundraising, storytelling, and raising awareness for the work of more than 200 nonprofit organizations,” said Jack Fleming, B.A.A. President and CEO. “We look forward to building upon the momentum of the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program in 2027, and aim to surpass our record-setting fundraising mark of $57.3 million achieved in 2026. We encourage all athletes –including Boston qualifiers—to support an organization within the Official Charity Program and add meaning to their miles ahead of April’s race.”
Twenty-two organizations are participating for the first time. The program has expanded from 160 organizations in 2024 to 215 for 2027, with charity runners comprising almost 10% of the Boston Marathon field.
BREWERS CLINCH FOURTH STRAIGHT NL CENTRAL TITLE
Milwaukee entered Tuesday with the NL Central championship within reach, and Jacob Misiorowski did his part. The Brewers’ ace delivered five shutout innings with seven strikeouts as Milwaukee defeated Pittsburgh, 5-1.
Then the final piece fell into place. Atlanta rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs, 6-3, eliminating Chicago from the division race and officially handing Milwaukee the NL Central championship.
For the Brewers, the celebration has become familiar. Milwaukee has now captured the NL Central in four consecutive seasons.
PETE ALONSO BLASTS 300TH CAREER HOME RUN AT CITI FIELD
Pete Alonso returned to Citi Field this week wearing a Baltimore Orioles uniform, but on Tuesday night the former Mets slugger delivered a moment that brought New York fans to their feet.
Alonso launched the 300th home run of his career in the top of the ninth inning against his former team. The solo homer tied the game at 3-3, but instead of silence from the home crowd, Alonso received an ovation.
The milestone carried additional weight because Citi Field was Alonso’s home for his first seven major league seasons. He hit 264 of his first 300 career home runs as a member of the Mets before leaving New York for Baltimore.
Now Alonso has reached 300, and he did it in the ballpark where most of those home runs were launched. This time the uniform was different, the home run hurt the Mets, but the response from the stands made clear that the connection between Alonso and New York remains.
