NEW ENGLAND — A 13-year-old boy is dead after a crash in Portland, Maine. Three people have been arrested following a violent home invasion in Ludlow. A Cape Cod police officer accused of driving under the influence has entered treatment, while three closely contested primary races in Rhode Island are headed for recounts.
TEEN KILLED, TWO INJURED IN PORTLAND CRASH
A 13-year-old boy was killed and two other teenagers were seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle Saturday night on Warren Avenue in Portland, Maine. Police responded around 8:46 p.m. near the Interstate 95 overpass, where a group of juvenile boys had been walking toward Riverside Street.
Initial investigations suggest that the teen boys “abruptly entered the roadway” before being struck by a vehicle driven by a 48-year-old Portland man. The 13-year-old died at the scene, while a 14-year-old and 15-year-old were transported to Maine Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
LACONIA APPROVES $86,500 FOR POLICE CAMERAS
The Laconia City Council voted 5-1 Monday to accept an $86,500 Department of Homeland Security grant allowing the Laconia Police Department to purchase solar-powered pole cameras. The grant identifies terrorism preparedness as an objective for the funding.
The city said the cameras would be used for surveillance in high-crime areas, during critical or emergency incidents and for overwatch during major events. Those events include Laconia Motorcycle Week and Pumpkinfest.
SANDWICH POLICE OFFICER ENTERS TREATMENT
Sandwich Police Officer Matthew Cotter will not be arraigned this week on an operating under the influence of liquor charge stemming from an off-duty crash Friday night in Sandwich. Matthew Cotter had been scheduled to appear Monday in Barnstable District Court.
Court officials said the arraignment was waived after Matthew Cotter enrolled himself in a treatment program. His case has been continued until October 15.
THREE ARRESTED AFTER LUDLOW HOME INVASION
Three people have been arrested in connection with a home invasion on Williams Street in Ludlow that seriously injured a man. Police said two men entered the residence, with one pistol-whipping a resident while the other punched another resident before they fled.
Chicopee Police later stopped the suspects’ vehicle and found a firearm and several other items believed to be connected to the home invasion. Ajaia Gladden, 25, of Three Rivers; Jailia Warren, 30, of Chicopee; and Shamal Thomas, 26, of Springfield, were arrested on multiple charges, including armed home invasion, and were arraigned Friday in Springfield District Court.
THREE RHODE ISLAND PRIMARY RACES HEADED FOR RECOUNTS
Three closely contested Rhode Island primary races are headed for recounts after the Board of Elections considered requests Monday. In the Republican race for governor, Aaron Guckian was declared the winner on primary night, but preliminary results show his margin over Elaine Pelino at just 259 votes.
Two Providence City Council Democratic primaries will also be recounted. Carmen Castillo trails incumbent Juan Pichardo by nine votes in Ward 9, while Joseph Casoli trails incumbent Justin Roias by 55 votes in Ward 4. The Board of Elections decided to recount all three races beginning Tuesday morning, with the goal of certifying the results later that day.
