WORCESTER, Mass. — There are plenty of big moments inside Polar Park. Baseball games are won here, crowds roar here and memories are made here. But on Monday, Aug. 24, some of the smallest people walking through the gates will be preparing for something that can feel much bigger than baseball.
Their first day of kindergarten.
Countdown to Kindergarten will take over Polar Park from 4 to 6:30 p.m., giving Worcester children and their families an opportunity to get ready for the 2026-27 school year before that first school morning arrives.
For a child, kindergarten can mean a new classroom, a new teacher and a building filled with unfamiliar faces. For parents and caregivers, it can bring an entirely different collection of questions.
That is part of what Countdown to Kindergarten is designed to address.
Worcester Public Schools early childhood staff will be available to answer questions directly from families and caregivers, giving them an opportunity to learn more about what to expect as their children begin school.
But this is not supposed to feel like an orientation meeting.
Instead, children will be able to experience pieces of the school day through hands-on, family-friendly activities designed to make the unfamiliar a little more familiar.
They will get the chance to climb aboard a school bus before they ever have to ride one to school.
They can meet a crossing guard and begin learning about another person they may encounter on their journey between home and the classroom.
There will be opportunities to make music, build with blocks and learn about healthy eating.
Children can even take part in the “Lunch Tray Relay,” turning another part of the school experience into something they can discover through play.
Families will also receive learning materials, and children can take home a free book.
For adults, these may seem like simple activities. But for a child preparing to enter kindergarten, sitting on a school bus or learning what happens around a lunch tray can help take some of the mystery out of a completely new experience.
And sometimes preparation for kindergarten is as much about the parents as it is about the children.
Sending a child to school for the first time means trusting new people, learning new routines and watching a son or daughter take another step toward independence.
Countdown to Kindergarten gives families the chance to experience some of those changes together before the first real school day.
The setting makes the occasion a little different, too.
Instead of introducing children to this next chapter through paperwork and instructions alone, Worcester is bringing families together at Polar Park, a place usually associated with baseball and community gatherings.
For a few hours, the ballpark becomes a place to practice something entirely different.
Children can explore. Parents can ask questions. Families can collect information. And everyone can begin imagining what that first day might actually look like.
Complimentary parking will be available at the LAZ Madison Street Parking Lot at 25 Madison Street.
Additional information and event tickets will be mailed to families and caregivers who have a registered kindergarten student for the 2026-27 school year.
Eventually, the activities at Polar Park will end, and families will head home.
Then another morning will arrive when those children will put on their school clothes, grab their backpacks and begin kindergarten for real.
Some may climb aboard a school bus they are suddenly a little less afraid of. Others may recognize a crossing guard or know a little more about what lunchtime will be like.
They will still be taking a very big step.
But after Countdown to Kindergarten, it may not feel quite so unknown.
And for hundreds of Worcester families preparing to send a child into a classroom for the first time, sometimes knowing what comes next can make that first step just a little easier.
