For me, one of the best places to enjoy that classic combination is Fuel America on Grove Street in Worcester.

Aug. 4 is celebrated each year as National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, an unofficial holiday dedicated to America’s favorite cookie. While no one knows exactly who established the annual celebration or when it officially began, the day has become a favorite excuse for bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, and cookie lovers across the country to celebrate one of the world’s most beloved desserts.
The chocolate chip cookie itself has deep roots in Massachusetts.
The original recipe was created in 1938 by Ruth Graves Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Wakefield added chopped pieces of Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate to cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt during baking. Instead, the chocolate held its shape, creating the now-famous chocolate chip cookie. The recipe quickly became a nationwide favorite, and Nestlé later partnered with Wakefield to print her recipe on its chocolate packaging, helping spread the cookie across America.
Nearly 90 years later, the chocolate chip cookie remains one of the country’s most popular desserts. From homemade family recipes to gourmet bakeries and neighborhood cafés, everyone seems to have their own version of what makes the “perfect” cookie.
