PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Massachusetts man is facing federal charges after prosecutors allege he attempted to entice someone he believed was a 14-year-old girl into sexual activity and traveled to Rhode Island to meet her, according to federal authorities.
Jung H. Nam, 35, is charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, and possession and receipt of child sexual abuse material. Court records show he made his initial appearance in federal court on the criminal complaint on July 29, 2026.
According to an affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint, the investigation began in July 2025 when an East Providence Police detective assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force launched an undercover online investigation using a social application. Authorities allege the detective, posing as a minor, communicated with a user later identified as Nam.
Federal investigators allege that during those online conversations, Nam discussed plans to meet for sexual activity before traveling to Warwick, Rhode Island.
Authorities allege that on July 7, 2025, after arranging a meeting in Warwick, Nam arrived at the agreed-upon location, where he was taken into custody by members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Officials said Nam was initially charged in Rhode Island District Court and was later charged in Kent County Superior Court in January 2026. Those state charges remain pending.
According to investigators, a state-authorized search of Nam’s cell phone led to the discovery of multiple images and videos of child sexual abuse material, including material depicting prepubescent minors.
The federal case is based on allegations contained in the criminal complaint. The charges remain pending, and Nam is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
