Fatal crashes in two parts of the state, a new statewide law affecting students returning to school, and an arrest in a violent crime investigation highlighted a busy day across Maine as authorities responded to deadly incidents and continued public safety efforts.
Officials investigated separate fatal crashes in Moscow and Gouldsboro, police arrested a suspect in connection with a Waldoboro shooting, and a new law restricting student use of personal electronic devices officially took effect in public schools.
Deadly Crash in Moscow
A man from Quebec was killed Monday morning after crashing into a tractor trailer that was hydroplaning in Moscow.
A Somerset County deputy responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 201 at approximately 10 a.m. Upon arrival, the deputy found a heavily damaged red Honda resting on a guardrail and a tractor trailer hauling an empty trailer in the northbound breakdown lane.
Authorities identified the driver of the Honda as 67-year-old Serge Poulin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
New Cell Phone Law Takes Effect
Students across Maine are now required to keep their cell phones and other internet-connected personal devices put away throughout the school day under a new statewide law.
The state’s “Bell-to-Bell No Cell” law took effect August 1 and requires every public school in Maine to prohibit student use of cell phones, smart watches and other internet-connected personal devices from the morning bell until the dismissal bell.
The law applies throughout the entire school day.
Arrest Made in Waldoboro Shooting
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred last week in Waldoboro.
The Waldoboro Police Department said Tysheem McGregor, 28, of New York, was taken into custody Saturday morning in Palermo.
McGregor was arrested on a warrant charging him with elevated aggravated assault in connection with a July 29 shooting at a Waldoboro residence.
Fatal Crash Under Investigation in Gouldsboro
Maine State Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash that claimed the life of an Ellsworth woman Sunday night.
According to police, the crash occurred at approximately 6:55 p.m. at the intersection of Route 1 and Old Route 1 in Gouldsboro.
Authorities said the Ellsworth woman was killed in the crash. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
