MARIETTA, Ga. — President Donald Trump traveled to Georgia on Wednesday for an event at Wheeler High School just hours after attending the dignified transfer of four fallen U.S. soldiers at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, shifting from a solemn military observance to an appearance before supporters that carried many of the familiar hallmarks of one of his political rallies.
Trump departed Dover following the dignified transfer and flew to Dobbins Air Reserve Base before traveling by motorcade to Wheeler High School in Marietta.
Along the route from Dobbins Air Reserve Base to the venue, state and local law enforcement officers maintained a heavy security presence.
Large numbers of people lined the roadway, with many appearing to support the president.
One individual was seen holding a “No Kings” sign.
Near the venue, another group displayed signs referencing the Jeffrey Epstein scandal while some individuals waved Mexican flags.
Inside the Wheeler High School gymnasium, the event featured many of the visual elements commonly associated with Trump campaign rallies despite being billed as an official White House event.
Music regularly heard before Trump rallies played throughout the venue as supporters filled the gymnasium.
The presidential seal appeared on the “Blue Goose” lectern.
Metal barriers surrounding the lectern displayed signs reading “powering the American dream.”
Another large sign reading “Georgia Welcomes President Donald J Trump” stood stage left, while an American flag occupied the opposite side of the stage.
Bleachers behind the lectern were filled with supporters holding signs as they waited for the president’s arrival.
Trump entered the gymnasium at 3:33 p.m. to loud applause as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” played through the sound system.
The president briefly swayed to the music while acknowledging the cheering crowd before beginning his remarks.
Trump opened with a joke referencing another presidential campaign despite already serving his second term.
“Well, thank you very much, everybody. It’s a special place, and I am here to announce my candidacy — I’m only kidding,” he said.
The president quickly turned to the earlier events of the day, reflecting on attending the dignified transfer of four American service members at Dover Air Force Base.
During his remarks, Trump referred to the event as a “ceremony.”
Air Force Public Affairs had previously instructed members of the media that the event should be referred to as a dignified transfer.
Trump also spoke about Lt. Tyler Feehan, whose family traveled aboard Air Force One from Delaware to Georgia.
“He was a person that was going all the way. He was going to be a general. He would have been a general very quickly. He was heading in that path,” Trump said.
The president described attending the dignified transfer as one of the most difficult responsibilities of his presidency.
He then addressed members of Feehan’s family who were present at the event.
“To Sherry and Stephen and David, we will carry Tyler’s memory in our hearts forever, and I just want to thank you. It’s an honor to have you here today.”
The audience responded with sustained applause for the family.
Trump later shifted his focus to his administration’s economic record and highlighted Operation Warp Speed, the federal initiative launched during his first administration to accelerate the development of COVID-19 vaccines.
The president acknowledged that he believes the program has not received sufficient recognition.
“We did Operation Warp Speed, and I’ll tell you, we did a great job, but we got very little credit for it. We should have been given big credit, but we got credit for everything else. And we had the best economy, but this this economy is ready to blow everything away ever of any country. There’s never been anything like what’s happening in the United States of America right now,” he said.
Trump has at times placed less emphasis on Operation Warp Speed during public appearances despite the program being a signature initiative of his first administration.
Operation Warp Speed was created to accelerate the research, manufacturing and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
The initiative helped expedite the development of multiple vaccines that were later authorized for emergency use.
Wednesday’s appearance reflected the dual nature of the president’s schedule, beginning with participation in a military dignified transfer honoring four fallen American service members before transitioning to a large public event centered on administration accomplishments, the economy and his policy agenda.
Although organized as an official White House event, the atmosphere inside the Wheeler High School gymnasium closely resembled that of Trump’s campaign-style rallies, from the music and staging to the enthusiastic crowd response throughout the afternoon.
The event underscored Trump’s continued reliance on direct public appearances before supportive audiences as he highlighted his administration’s record while also pausing to recognize the sacrifice of fallen members of the U.S. military and their families.
