AUGUSTA, Maine — Motorists traveling through Augusta should prepare for changing traffic patterns, lane shifts and possible delays over the next two weeks as construction activity continues on the Bangor Street project, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
MaineDOT announced that construction crews will begin a new phase of work during the week of July 20, 2026, with additional overnight operations scheduled for the following week.
The agency said the work is part of the ongoing Bangor Street project and will involve multiple construction activities designed to advance the project while maintaining traffic through the work zone.
According to MaineDOT, crews will perform daytime construction layout activities during the week of July 20.
Construction crews are also scheduled to lower and plate catch basins during that same period.
In addition, test pits will be completed as work progresses.
During these operations, MaineDOT said traffic will generally be shifted to the inside travel lanes while crews complete the scheduled work.
Drivers traveling through the area should expect temporary changes in traffic patterns as construction operations move forward.
The agency said motorists should anticipate lane shifts while work is taking place.
Possible travel delays are also expected.
Construction vehicles and equipment will be entering and exiting the work area throughout the project.
MaineDOT is urging motorists to remain alert while traveling through the construction zone.
The department advises drivers to reduce speed while approaching and traveling through the work area.
Motorists are also being asked to follow all posted traffic signs and any directions provided by flaggers working at the site.
According to the department, the next phase of construction is scheduled to begin during the week of July 27, 2026.
That portion of the project will include drainage work conducted during nighttime hours.
At the same time, utility crews are scheduled to remain active during daytime hours lowering utility structures associated with the project.
The combination of daytime utility work and nighttime drainage operations means construction activity will continue throughout much of the day and evening during the second week of scheduled work.
MaineDOT said traffic impacts are expected to continue during these operations as crews move equipment and complete project tasks.
Officials emphasized that all construction work remains weather-dependent.
Project schedules may change depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances affecting construction operations.
The Bangor Street project represents another phase of ongoing transportation infrastructure improvements in Augusta, with work designed to improve the roadway while maintaining traffic flow through active construction zones.
Until construction is completed, MaineDOT is encouraging drivers to plan for additional travel time, remain attentive behind the wheel and use extra caution whenever traveling through the Bangor Street work area.
