HARTFORD, Conn. — While many people across Connecticut were celebrating the Fourth of July, Hartford police spent the early morning hours responding to two separate shootings that left two men wounded less than two hours apart.
The back-to-back incidents unfolded in different parts of the city, sending investigators to multiple crime scenes as detectives worked to determine whether the shootings are connected or completely unrelated.
The first emergency call came before sunrise.
Officers responded to the 300 block of Woodland Street around 4:30 a.m. for a report of a person shot.
When police arrived, they said they found a man in his 30s who had been shot.
Despite the violence, officers found the victim alert and conscious when they reached the scene.
He was alert and conscious on scene and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Police immediately secured the area while investigators began searching for physical evidence and speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or heard the gunfire that shattered the early morning hours.
Before detectives could fully process that crime scene, another shooting was reported elsewhere in Hartford.
Less than two hours later, officers responded to the 100 block of Westland Street on a ShotSpotter notification.
The technology alerted officers to possible gunfire, sending police racing to another neighborhood where they quickly located another victim.
In the area, police said they found a man in his 30s who had been shot.
Like the victim from the Woodland Street shooting, the second victim was conscious when officers arrived.
He was alert and conscious on scene and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
Within a span of less than two hours, two separate shooting investigations were underway, forcing Hartford detectives to divide resources between two active crime scenes while working to establish exactly what occurred in each incident.
Authorities have not announced whether the shootings are connected, whether any suspects have been identified, or what circumstances led to either attack.
Police also have not released the identities of the victims or provided updated information regarding their medical conditions beyond confirming they were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators are expected to examine physical evidence recovered from both locations, review surveillance footage where available, and interview witnesses as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to each shooting.
The timing of the incidents adds another layer to the investigation.
With the shootings occurring during the early morning hours of the Fourth of July, detectives will work to determine who was in the area, where the victims were before the shootings occurred, and whether any evidence links the two incidents.
At this stage, authorities have not announced any arrests.
The Hartford Police Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions are continuing to investigate both shootings.
Major Crimes detectives and Crime Scene investigators will continue collecting forensic evidence, documenting both scenes, and following investigative leads in an effort to identify those responsible.
As the investigation moves forward, detectives will also determine whether the incidents were isolated acts of violence or whether there is any connection between the two shootings.
For now, many of the most important questions remain unanswered.
Investigators have not disclosed what led to either shooting, whether the victims knew their attackers, or whether additional victims or suspects may be identified as the investigation continues.
What is clear is that Hartford police were called to two separate scenes involving gunfire within a remarkably short period of time, beginning with a shooting on Woodland Street before another ShotSpotter activation led officers to a second wounded man on Westland Street.
