Professional women’s soccer took center stage tonight as Boston Legacy FC hosted powerhouse Seattle Reign FC at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, RI. With a passionate New England crowd packing the stands, the atmosphere was electric ahead of kickoff for this highly anticipated NWSL matchup.
Local fans turned out to see how the home side would compete against a veteran Seattle squad featuring international talent and proven league leaders. Coming into tonight, both Boston’s explosive attacking frontline and Seattle’s disciplined defensive backline were looking to make an impact early.
Boston entered the night still searching for consistency in its first NWSL campaign against a veteran Seattle side accustomed to competing in high-pressure matches. Boston entered the night sitting at 14th place, looking to climb the table at 2-5-3, while Seattle came in sitting at 11th place, with a 3-4-2 record, hoping to bounce back from consecutive losses.
Seattle broke through first as Sofia Huerta calmly buried a penalty kick past the keeper, giving the Reign a 1-0 lead in front of a packed Centreville Bank Stadium. Although the shot total for each team was nearly identical (seven for Boston, six for Seattle) in the opening half, Seattle controlled possession and capitalized on Boston mistakes throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Boston Legacy FC showed moments of attacking pressure and created chances inside the box but struggled to consistently maintain momentum or convert opportunities, allowing Seattle to maintain a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.
Seattle Reign FC doubled its advantage early in the second half as Maddie Dahlien found the back of the net, extending the visitors’ lead to 2-0 and putting Boston Legacy FC under increased pressure. Boston Legacy FC found a late breakthrough, with a goal by Aissata Traoré in the 90th minute, cutting Seattle’s lead to 2-1 and injecting energy into the home crowd in the closing moments of the match.
Despite the late push, Seattle Reign FC maintained composure defensively and closed out the victory behind strong possession play and disciplined organization throughout the second half. With the victory, Seattle Reign FC improved to 4-4-2 on the season, while Boston Legacy FC fell to 2-6-3 following the 2–1 defeat.
