In New Haven, CT, a double shooting that sent two young men to the hospital has now led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect, bringing new focus to a violent incident that unfolded in the early morning hours.
Police say the shooting happened at around 1:00 a.m. on February 15th. Two 20-year-old men were struck and later transported by a private vehicle to other locations in the city with non-life threatening injuries.
The scene itself was chaotic.
According to investigators, the department’s ShotSpotter shot detection system picked up gunfire on James Street at around 1 a.m. When officers responded, they encountered a large group of people dispersing from the area of Mill and Chapel streets, a sign of how quickly the situation had escalated and then scattered.
For weeks, the case remained open.
Then on Wednesday, police announced a break. A 16-year-old was taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting. The charges are serious and reflect the level of violence involved: two counts of 1st degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and 1st degree reckless endangerment.
The timeline tells the story. Gunfire erupts in the early morning hours. Two victims are wounded. A crowd disperses before officers can fully lock down the scene. And weeks later, investigators identify and arrest a suspect.
What remains is the broader context. A shooting involving a juvenile suspect, two young adult victims, and a large gathering in the middle of the night. The injuries were not life-threatening, but the charges underscore how close the situation came to something far worse.
Now the case moves forward through the court system, with police tying the February shooting to a suspect whose age adds another layer to an already serious incident.
