Framingham – A man has been found guilty in connection with a decades-old violent crime after a jury returned a conviction following a lengthy trial.
According to authorities, 73-year-old Stephen Paul Gale was convicted in Middlesex Superior Court of multiple serious offenses, including aggravated rape, kidnapping, and armed robbery. The case stems from an incident that occurred in 1989 at a retail store in Framingham.
Prosecutors said two employees were opening the store when the suspect entered, displayed a firearm, and forced them into the back of the business. During the incident, the victims were robbed and subjected to violent assaults before managing to escape and seek help.
The case remained unsolved for decades until investigators were able to revisit the evidence using modern forensic methods. Officials said advances in DNA analysis, along with investigative genetic genealogy, helped identify a potential suspect.
Authorities later developed additional evidence through family DNA comparisons, which ultimately led to charges being filed in 2024.
Law enforcement officials located the suspect in California, where he attempted to flee during an encounter with authorities before being taken into custody after a pursuit.
Officials credited years of investigative work and collaboration between multiple agencies for helping bring the case to resolution. Prosecutors noted that cases of this nature can take significant time to solve, particularly when earlier technology limited the ability to identify suspects.
Sentencing in the case is scheduled for March 30.
