Holyoke – Firefighters battled a labor-intensive structure fire Monday afternoon on Beech Street that required multiple alarms and an extensive overhaul.
At 3:55 p.m., crews from the Holyoke Fire Department responded to a reported working fire at 171 Beech Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames at the rear of the building that had already begun extending into the home.
Crews quickly launched an aggressive interior attack, successfully knocking down the main body of fire. However, the blaze had already spread into concealed void spaces between floors, complicating suppression efforts.
Due to the fire’s rapid extension into the second and third floors, a second alarm was requested to bring additional personnel to the scene. As conditions worsened and flames pushed further into wall cavities and attic spaces, a third alarm was later struck.
Firefighters were forced to open large sections of walls and ceilings throughout the structure to fully extinguish hidden pockets of fire, making for a prolonged and labor-intensive operation.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials extended thanks to the mutual aid departments for their support, as well as the Holyoke Police Department, Holyoke Gas and Electric, Cataldo Ambulance Service, and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services for their assistance at the scene.
