Bourne – A single-vehicle crash in Bourne on Sunday evening caused road closures and downed power lines, leading to multiple charges against the driver, according to police.
At approximately 5:10 p.m. on March 29, 2026, the Bourne Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a crash on Sandwich Road involving a pickup truck that struck a utility pole.
Responding officers, along with Bourne Fire & Rescue and the Massachusetts State Police, arrived to find a heavily damaged black 2012 Chevrolet Silverado tangled in downed power lines.
The driver, identified as a 36-year-old man from Brewster and the sole occupant, was able to exit the vehicle before first responders arrived. He was evaluated at the scene and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Sandwich Road was closed in both directions as crews worked the scene and remains shut down while repairs to the utility pole continue. Traffic was diverted with assistance from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Utility companies, including Eversource Energy and Comcast, responded to secure the area and shut off affected lines. The damaged vehicle was later removed from the roadway by a towing service.
Following an investigation, police determined the driver was impaired by drugs and was also using a mobile device at the time of the crash. Authorities have filed multiple charges, including operating under the influence of drugs (subsequent offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, failure to wear a seatbelt, and a hands-free mobile device violation.
Officials noted that while injuries were minor, the situation could have been far more serious. Police are reminding drivers to avoid impaired or distracted driving and to prioritize safety on the road.
