Sturbridge – After a major snowstorm left more than 20 inches of snow on the ground, an elderly couple faced serious problems. Their walkway was completely buried, and the snow had covered the filler tube and vent for their home’s oil tank. With no safe access to the tank, they couldn’t receive a scheduled oil delivery, putting their heat at risk during freezing temperatures.
When the call for help came in, Lt. Larry Batman, without hesitation, knew something needed to be done. He reached out to School Resource Officer Ben Hoffman to see if a few capable students might be willing to assist.
Response was immediate.
On Feb. 26, at Noon members of the senior carpentry class from Tantasqua Regional High School made an unscheduled stop while out on a routine lumber yard trip. Joined by Officer Hoffman, armed with shovels and determination, the students cleared the snow from the couple’s walkway and uncovered the oil tank’s filler and vent pipes, restoring access for a fuel delivery and ensuring the home could be heated again.
The couple was deeply moved by the unexpected act of kindness and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the students’ willingness to help during a difficult time.
The students were praised by community leaders for their initiative and compassion, noting that such acts demonstrate the strength of local partnerships between schools and public safety officials.
What began as a call for help became a powerful reminder of what community truly looks like.
