Democrat Mikie Sherrill slammed the gas on Republican Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey, flipping the governor’s mansion and handing Democrats a high-profile win in the first election of Trump’s second term. NewsTalk New England called it: Sherrill, a fourth-term congresswoman, crushed Ciattarelli, who was trying for a third shot at the governor’s office after narrowly losing to Phil Murphy in 2021.
The race boiled over in the final weeks, turning personal and nasty. Ciattarelli tried to corner Sherrill on her Naval Academy past, hammering her for not walking at her 1994 graduation. Sherrill fired back hard, saying she refused to turn in classmates tied to a cheating scandal, and turned the tables by accusing Ciattarelli and his medical publishing firm of fueling the opioid crisis. Both sides got fierce over military records, with largely unredacted documents released near the finish line sparking a firestorm of accusations.
Sherrill ran the campaign like a laser-guided missile, focusing on affordability, health care, and Trump’s unpopularity in the Garden State. She promised to consolidate small school districts to cut property taxes, nix private prisons, and hammer home that Trump-era economic decisions threatened New Jersey families. Ciattarelli tried to ride the GOP wave and embrace the former president, but with Trump’s approval tanking at 51 percent in New Jersey, the strategy didn’t stick.
By the time the votes were counted, Sherrill’s blend of moderate Democrat credibility, military chops, and anti-Trump messaging proved unstoppable. She picked Dale Caldwell, president of Centenary University, as her lieutenant governor. The win signals a shot of momentum for Democrats after a rocky stretch and sends a stark message to Republicans struggling to wrestle back control in states where Trump’s shadow looms large.
