North Carolina A&T and Maine both enter Saturday’s clash in Orono carrying more questions than answers, but one of them is guaranteed to leave with momentum. Kickoff at Alfond Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. EDT, marking the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and Black Bears in Coastal Athletic Association play.
The Aggies arrive at 1-3, fresh off a humbling 62-20 loss to rival North Carolina Central. Their lone win came in league play, and that’s the lifeline they’re clinging to. A&T’s defense has been battered, giving up 21 touchdowns in just four games, while the offense has yet to establish a consistent rhythm. Senior back Wesley Graves is the workhorse, and receiver Amonte Jones is emerging as a reliable target for quarterback Noah Sanders. Up front, veteran lineman Korion Sharpe anchors a unit that has to protect better. On defense, Aaron Harris brings playmaking ability both as a corner and return man, while linebacker Joshua Iseah leads the tackling charge.
Maine sits at 0-4, coming off a 45-17 drubbing at Georgia Southern. The Black Bears have struggled mightily to score, ranking last in the CAA in offensive production. The exception has been running back Sincere Baines, who leads the league in yards per carry and sits fourth in rushing yards overall—making him the player A&T must key on. Quarterback Carter Peevy provides veteran steadiness, but he needs help from his line and receivers like Scott Woods, the team’s top pass catcher. On defense, linebacker Christian Thomas leads in tackles, while defensive backs Devin Vaught and Jamaree Gibson have flashed playmaking ability in the secondary. Special teams could swing things too, with return ace Trevin Ewing giving Maine a chance to flip field position.
Both defenses share a weakness: red zone stops. Both offenses share a problem: consistency. For A&T, the path is riding Graves and finding explosive plays through Sanders to Jones and Dillard. For Maine, it’s pounding Baines and letting Peevy work short fields.
The Aggies are fighting to show their 62-point meltdown was an outlier. The Black Bears are fighting to avoid another winless September. One will steady their season Saturday; the other will keep searching.
