After splitting a six-game road series in Syracuse, the WooSox return home to Polar Park tonight to face the struggling Rochester Red Wings. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m., with Shane Drohan (4-1, 2.08 ERA) taking the mound for Worcester against Rochester’s lefty Jake Eder.
The Red Wings enter with a 57-84 record and have been especially shaky on the road this season, but don’t let the numbers fool you. Players like Jose Tena and Phillip Glasser still have the ability to punish any mistake pitch, and they’re capable of turning a game around in a hurry. Worcester will need Drohan at his sharpest, mixing his fastball and changeup effectively while keeping the ball low in the zone to avoid letting the Red Wings’ top hitters get comfortable.
Offensively, Worcester’s lineup looks poised for production. Mikey Romero has been red-hot, and Abraham Toro and Jhostynxon Garcia provide depth in the middle of the order. Trayce Thompson and Tyler McDonough add power from the corners, while Nathan Hickey and Kristian Campbell can set the table or drive in runs when the opportunity presents itself. The WooSox bats will need to stay aggressive early and put pressure on Eder, who is making his first Triple-A start.
The bullpen remains a weapon for Worcester, with recent performances from Tyler Uberstine and Shane Drohan giving the team confidence they can close out the game if needed. Relievers like Hobie Harris and Isaiah Campbell offer strikeout potential late in the game, which could be key if Rochester scrapes a run across in the later innings.
