The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is urging travelers to plan ahead this week as major construction projects and lane closures impact JFK Airport, LaGuardia, and key regional bridges and tunnels. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time, while air travelers are encouraged to use mass transit whenever possible.
At JFK, ongoing work on the airport’s $19 billion redevelopment has led to rerouted roadways and relocated for-hire vehicle pickups. Terminal 4 passengers can take a free shuttle to Lot 66, while passengers at Terminals 5 and 7 should use AirTrain JFK to the Howard Beach pickup lot. Drivers are encouraged to use the free drop-off and pickup lot at AirTrain JFK’s Lefferts Boulevard station, connecting to terminals via an eight-minute train ride. Temporary changes also affect ramps and taxi stands at Terminals 4, 5, and 7, and parking configurations have been adjusted to accommodate construction. Air travelers should also ensure they have TSA-compliant identification, including REAL ID or other acceptable forms, as non-compliant IDs may result in additional screening. Pre-booking airport parking is recommended to guarantee a spot and avoid peak-period surcharges at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International Airport.
Public transit remains a preferred option. The MTA recommends AirTrain JFK, the Long Island Rail Road, or subways and buses, while LaGuardia’s Q70 bus continues fare-free service to encourage transit use. PATH riders should note overnight closures of the 9 St and 23 St stations from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m., with nearby stations available as alternatives.
Significant lane closures are planned on the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, and Bayonne Bridge. On the George Washington Bridge, lane closures will occur on various ramps and bridge approaches from Sept. 2–5, including overnight closures on upper and lower levels. The Lincoln Tunnel will see alternating tube closures overnight from Sept. 2–5, while the Bayonne Bridge will close three southbound toll lanes one at a time overnight on Sept. 2–3.
Travelers using Port Authority facilities are advised to check online for real-time traffic updates, service changes, and construction impacts, and to allow extra time for commutes.
