A man was killed and several others were injured Tuesday afternoon after a car crashed into a Planet Fitness gym in Elizabeth, New Jersey, according to police.
The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at the Planet Fitness located at 647 Newark Avenue. Police said a 69-year-old woman drove her car through a bank of windows near the entrance of the gym, striking several people inside.
A 72-year-old man who was near the front window was pronounced dead at the scene. A 59-year-old man who was on a treadmill suffered cuts and abrasions. The driver also sustained injuries consistent with airbag deployment.
Officials said a total of four people, including the driver, were transported to the hospital as a precaution. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
The City of Elizabeth buildings department determined the crash caused structural damage to the facility. The city’s construction official has closed the gym until further notice.
Police spokeswoman Ruby Contreras said the cause of the crash is still under investigation but noted that all parties involved are cooperating with authorities.
