The Connecticut Sun dropped their second straight game to the Phoenix Mercury this season, falling 82-66 Tuesday night at PHX Arena. The Sun now sit at 5-23 on the year, with their next matchup against the Mercury scheduled for September 6 in Connecticut.
Marina Mabrey led Connecticut with 18 points and three assists. Tina Charles added 16 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while Leila Lacan recorded 10 points, five boards, and six steals.
Phoenix jumped out to a 26-6 first-quarter lead and maintained control throughout, despite the Sun cutting the deficit to single digits late in the second quarter. Connecticut showed life in the third, led by Lacan’s defense and a three-pointer from Mabrey, but the Mercury answered each run.
The Sun shot just 34.7% from the field and 20% from three, while Phoenix hit 45.3% overall and 40% from beyond the arc. Connecticut forced 18 turnovers and scored 26 points off them.
Satou Sabally led the Mercury with 23 points. Alyssa Thomas added a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.
