The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran left-handed pitcher Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league infielder Blaze Jordan, the team announced Thursday morning.
To make room for Matz on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins to the 60-day Injured List.
Matz, 34, has posted a 5-2 record with one save and a 3.44 ERA across 32 appearances—including two starts—for St. Louis this season. He has held left-handed hitters to a .179 batting average and a .442 OPS while ranking in the 98th percentile in walk rate (4.0%) and 87th percentile in barrel rate (5.3%) among major league pitchers.
Originally drafted by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft, the New York native has a 4.24 career ERA with 928 strikeouts over 982.2 innings in 225 Major League appearances. He has pitched for the Mets (2015–20), Toronto Blue Jays (2021), and Cardinals (2023–25).
Matz has made 172 career starts with a 4.31 ERA and a 3.48 ERA across 53 relief outings.
Blaze Jordan, 21, had been one of Boston’s top offensive performers in the minor league system this season. He was selected by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
