A gunman wearing body armor and armed with an M4 rifle opened fire inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening, killing an off-duty NYPD officer and three civilians before turning the weapon on himself, police said.

The suspected shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the skyscraper, which houses major tenants including the National Football League, Blackstone, and KPMG.

The shooting began just before 6:30 p.m., when Tamura exited a black BMW outside the building, entered the lobby with a rifle in hand, and immediately opened fire, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

“Surveillance shows the shooter entering the lobby, turning right, and firing directly at an NYPD officer,” Tisch said. The officer, identified later as 36-year-old Didarul Islam of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was working a security detail at the time. He was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Two male civilians and one female civilian were also shot and killed. A fifth person—a male—is hospitalized in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.

Officials say Tamura continued firing as he made his way to the elevator bank, shooting a female civilian who had taken cover behind a pillar, a security guard at the front desk, and another man in the lobby. He then entered an elevator and traveled to the 33rd floor, where he continued firing rounds in the hallway before fatally shooting himself in the chest.

Footage shows the gunman briefly allowing one woman to pass him unharmed before taking the elevator upstairs.

NYPD officers secured the building and confirmed that the shooter acted alone. “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” Tisch posted on X.

Employees inside the office tower were instructed to shelter in place for hours, with many remaining on lockdown until escorted out by police. Some workers received internal messages stating the threat had been resolved but were urged to stay put as investigations continued.

A visibly shaken Jessica Chen, an employee in the building, recounted the harrowing moments during the lockdown. “The only thing between me and the door was a chair flipped over,” she told ABC News. “I texted my parents ‘I love them.’”

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the death toll and identified Officer Islam during a late-night press conference. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the NYPD,” Adams said. “Officer Islam was a 3½-year veteran of the department.”

Investigators say Tamura traveled cross-country in recent days, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and arriving in New Jersey on Monday afternoon. A search of his vehicle uncovered a rifle case, ammunition, and a revolver. Tamura was carrying a Nevada concealed carry permit, and law enforcement is probing whether he specifically targeted the NFL offices on the 33rd floor.

The motive remains under investigation.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York are assisting in the ongoing probe.

Police have asked the public to avoid East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues due to active police presence.

KPMG, one of the firms housed in the building, issued a statement extending sympathies to the victims and praising the bravery of law enforcement and building security.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased civilians.
