Red Sox Losing Streak Extends to Six after Shutout Loss against Toronto, 9-0

The Boston Red Sox hosted the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park in Boston on Friday night. The Sox came in on a five-game losing streak after getting swept by the Los Angeles Angels during the week. The Blue Jays won a rubber match against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday.
The Sox placed Marcelo Mayer on the bereavement list, and the Sox recalled Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
The Sox had Brayan Bello start six innings for the Sox, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, three walks, and just one strikeout. This is his fifth consecutive quality start, and his second longest streak of his career behind a seven consecutive start streak back in 2023. He’s allowed three or fewer earned runs in 12 out of his last 13 starts.
Jose Berrios pitched seven innings, he allowed four hits, no earned runs, one walk, eight strikeouts. He recorded his second start this season with seven or more innings with no earned runs, as he also did this on June 21st against the Chicago White Sox. Berrios has pitched 6.2 innings and two or less earned runs allowed in his last five starts against the Boston Red Sox. The only other pitcher to do this was Mark Buehrle for the Chicago White Sox from 2001 to 2005.
George Springer hit three singles, two RBIs and two runs, and has hit safely in his last six games. Andres Gimenez also hit three singles, and walked, and had his second three hit game and his second three RBI game of the season.
Ernie Clement hit two singles and walked three times and reached for a total of five times, and set a career high of the amount of times that he reached base, and in walks. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit two singles and a walk, and set a season high of three runs scored. Alejandro Kirk hit a single, double, and walked twice, as he’s reached multiple times in each of his last three starts. Addison Barger doubled and walked, and he has a 16-game on-base streak, which is the third longest streak (second in the AL) behind Tampa Bay’s Yandy Diaz and Atlanta’s Matt Olson.
The Blue Jays won 9-0, and got their sixth shutout victory this season, and for the third time in back-to-back games.
The Sox only had four hits, including a double from Roman Anthony, as he’s reached in six out of his last seven games. Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddane Rafaela got the other hits for the Sox.
The Sox have had five hits or less and have scored two runs or fewer in their last three games, this is the first such streak since May 10 to 12th, 2021, when they went 0-3 in that span. This was the third time the Sox had been shut out this season, and their first time at home this season, as the last time they were shutout at home. The Sox not being shutout in their first 39 home games this season, and it’s the longest streak since the 2023 season, when they weren’t shutout in the first 41 home games.
They allowed five or more runs for the sixth time in the last nine, and eight or more runs in four of those games. They have issued eight or more walks for the third time in the last seven games, after doing it just once in their first 76 games. The Sox have tied for the fourth most in total games with eight or more walks with the Blue Jays, with being behind the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and the Los Angeles Angels.
The teams will play again on Saturday at 4:10 pm first pitch with Lucas Giolito going up against Chris Bassitt.
