On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a pivotal meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. Both underscored the critical importance of the U.S.-Egypt partnership, which serves as a cornerstone for promoting regional peace, security, and stability in an increasingly volatile environment.
In a show of gratitude, Secretary Rubio acknowledged Egypt’s instrumental role in mediating the release of hostages in conflict areas and commended the Egyptian government for its ongoing humanitarian efforts in Gaza, which have included the consistent delivery of essential supplies and the acceptance of medical evacuations for injured civilians. He emphasized the necessity of continuing close collaboration to establish effective post-conflict governance and security structures in Gaza, asserting that Hamas must never be allowed to regain control or pose a threat to Israel’s security again.
During the discussion, Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Abdelatty also delved into the complex situation in Syria. They highlighted the urgent need for inclusive governance that addresses the diverse needs of the Syrian population, as well as the imperative to prevent the nation from becoming a haven for terrorist activities that could destabilize the region and pose risks to neighboring countries.
Turning their attention to Sudan, the two leaders expressed their concern over the ongoing conflict, stressing the importance of pressuring the warring factions to cease hostilities and facilitate humanitarian access for those in desperate need. Additionally, Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Abdelatty examined the pressing issue of Egypt’s water security, acknowledging the challenges posed by regional water resources and the impact of climate change, and the need for cooperative strategies to ensure sustainability.
