National Guard Soldiers From New York Recognized At Deployment Ceremony

On Saturday, January 25th, in the auditorium of Shaker High School in Latham, New York, a deployment ceremony took place, recognizing 111 soldiers from the New York Army National Guard. These soldiers, part of the 206th Military Police Company, are based at the New York National Guard headquarters in Latham, and are set to deploy on active duty to Joint Task Force Guantanamo, stationed at the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Throughout their nine-month deployment, these Soldiers will carry out critical detention operations as part of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, which plays a vital role in the custody and management of detainees involved in armed conflict. As reported by the Department of Defense, there are currently 26 detainees held at this secure facility.

The Soldiers have been rigorously preparing for their deployment over the past year, engaging in extensive training that includes tactical exercises, legal training, and cultural sensitivity sessions. Before their deployment, they will complete an additional three weeks of specialized training at Fort Bliss, Texas, to ensure they are fully equipped for the challenges ahead in Guantanamo Bay.

In previous missions supporting Joint Task Force Guantanamo, Soldiers from other units, including the 107th Military Police Company, the 442nd Military Police Company, the 102nd Military Police Battalion, and the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters battalion, have successfully deployed, showcasing the commitment and resilience of the New York Army National Guard to this important mission.
