President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had ordered a series of military airstrikes targeting a high-ranking Islamic State (IS) attack planner, along with other members of the organization, in Somalia. This operation is part of a broader strategy to dismantle terrorist networks in the region.
While Trump did not disclose the name of the specific IS planner targeted in the strikes, he refrained from confirming whether that individual was among those killed. Following the announcement, White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the operation.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth provided more context regarding the strikes in a statement to the media, clearly stating that the airstrikes were conducted under the directive of President Trump and in close coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia. He emphasized that the U.S. Africa Command was authorized to execute coordinated airstrikes specifically aimed at ISIS-Somalia operatives entrenched in the Golis mountains region.
According to Hegseth, multiple operatives associated with the Islamic State were eliminated during the airstrikes, and he assured that no civilian casualties occurred during the operations, highlighting the precision and efficacy of the military action.
This recent airstrike follows a U.S. military operation in Somalia last May, which targeted IS militants and resulted in the deaths of three individuals, as reported by U.S. Africa Command at the time. The presence of IS militants in Somalia is a pressing concern, with estimates suggesting that their numbers are in the hundreds, primarily dispersed throughout the Cal Miskaat mountains in the Puntland region’s Bari area, according to assessments by the International Crisis Group.
Saturday’s operation is also notable for coinciding with previous military airstrikes carried out on January 30 in northwest Syria, where a significant senior operative from Hurras al-Din, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, was killed, as confirmed by U.S. Central Command. This illustrates the U.S. military’s ongoing commitment to mitigating terrorist threats globally and maintaining security in volatile regions.
“This action further degrades ISIS’s ability to plot and conduct terrorist attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians,” Hegseth said. “Sends a clear signal that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the United States and our allies, even as we conduct robust border-protection and many other operations under President Trump’s leadership.”
