On a cold Saturday at Fenway Park the Wasabi Fenway Bowl took place between the University of Connecticut (UConn) and The University of North Carolina (UNC).
The biggest story going into this game surrounds Bill Belichick who will take over the UNC Football program next year but for interim head coach Freddie Kitchens and UConn head coach Jim Mora, Belichick was not something either team was worried about.
Their main focus was the game which was all UConn in the first half. The Huskies first play of the game was a 47 yard run from Mel Brown which led to a field goal to put UConn up 3-0.
A few drives later the Huskies would add to their lead with a 38 yard passing touchdown from Joe Fagnano to Skyler Bell. UConn didn’t hold their 10-0 lead for long as the Tar Heels special teams cooked up a 98 yard kick return for a touchdown.
The Huskies weren’t fazed as Alex Honig would catch a 4 yard passing touchdown from Fagnano. The UConn lead grew to 17-7 after the second Fagnano passing touchdown
Later Cam Edwards would rush for a touchdown of his own which gave UConn the 24-7 lead going into the half.
The second half was low scoring compared to the first as the only score in the third quarter would come from a UConn field goal giving them a 27-7 lead.
UNC would score a touchdown in the fourth when running back Caleb Hood threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to John Copenhaver.
The Huskies went on to win 27-14 winning their first bowl game since 2010 and have their first nine win season since 2007.
Postgame UConn Coach Jim Mora said “I feel like a proud father.”
It was indeed a proud day for UConn football. UNC on the other hand will look to improve and come back stronger which is what interim head coach Freddie Kitchens mentioned.
“We’re going to get back in the gym and get better.” Kitchens said and if you’re ur Bill Belichick then you have some work to do when you get there.
