As most folks have grave concerns about riding the New York City Subway because of its reputation of being unsafe for commuters, those concerns became more than real with a woman set on fire Sunday.
The victim who the NYPD has yet to identify was discovered around 7:30 a.m. on an F train in Coney Island at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the victim was a female, and that the suspect calmly walked up to the victim, who was in a seated position at the end of a subway car, and used what the NYPD believes was a lighter to ignite the victim’s clothing, which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds
Responding officers found the woman standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, and hours later, the victim’s body was carried out in a body bag.
The suspect, the NYPD, says is a migrant from Guatemala who came to the US in 2018. Sources tell NewsTalk New England his name is Sebastin Zapeta, and he was arrested. Commissioner Tisch announced earlier Sunday night.
