On March 31, 2022, tragedy struck when Amelia Laguerre was leaving her workplace in a New Hyde Park medical facility. As she walked to her car in the underground parking garage, her ex-fiancé, Quay Sean Hines, approached her and fatally shot her. Amelia and Quay had a turbulent, on-again-off-again relationship that ultimately led Amelia to decide to move on. Unfortunately, Quay’s obsession with their relationship culminated in this horrific act of violence.

Quay, armed with a loaded firearm, entered the underground parking garage and unleashed a barrage of gunfire at Amelia, striking her nine times before fleeing the scene. The Nassau County Police Department responded to reports of gunshots and found Amelia, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset at 4:49 p.m.

Following an intensive investigation, Quay was apprehended by the Nassau County Police Department’s Bureau of Special Operations and Homicide Squad on April 8, 2022.

The wheels of justice turned, and on September 9, 2024, the murder of Amelia went to trial. The jury was presented with the harrowing details of Amelia’s tragic death, and after a mere two hours of deliberation, on September 26, the jury swiftly found Quay guilty of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

Quay is scheduled for sentencing on October 29, 2024, with a potential maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison.
