On April 6th of this year, the Boston Red Sox placed their star shortstop, Trevor Story, on the 10-Day Injured List due to a left shoulder dislocation. The following week, on April 12th, Story underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum and an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim. The procedure was carried out by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, and the Red Sox reported that the operation was a success.
Up until the injury, Story had been a significant presence in the Red Sox line-up, starting in each of the team’s first eight games of the season. During this time, he maintained a batting average of .226, driving in four runs and securing three walks.
Looking at his career so far, which consists of 890 games played with the Colorado Rockies and the Red Sox, Story has accumulated a solid batting average of .265, with 177 home runs and 124 stolen bases to his name.
Despite the setback, the Red Sox have been proactive in helping Story get back to full fitness, and Sunday, Story was on a rehab assignment with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox, playing in the sixth game of a six-game homestand against the Toledo Mud Hens, Story went 2-for-4 with a single, double, and run scored as the Worcester Red Sox DH.
Following Sunday’s 11-6 Worcester Red Sox win against the Mud Hens Story was asked what was it like getting to be back in game action after his injury and he replied, “Yeah, it was great.” Story added, “Playing games is pretty special to me and to my family and to all the people that helped me. So, I know there’s still a long way to go, but today was a big step. I tried to have fun with it, so it was fun.”
Story talked about the urgency to get back to the Red Sox major league club, but also talked about getting back in game shape which he expects to continue doing with the Worcester Red Sox as they go on the road for a six-game series with the Rochester Red Wings.
As for being back at shortstop, Story expects that to be as soon as Monday nights Worcester Red Sox and Red Wings game.
